Willy's created hype by promising a vehicle in 1917 that would include a self starter and electric lights all for under $500. As early as 1909 there had been vehicles badged with the Willys name as well as Overland. Willys-Overland Motor Company. In 1908, John Willys bought the Overland Automotive Division of Standard Wheel Company and in 1912 renamed it Willys-Overland Motor Company. From 1912 to 1918, Willys was the second largest producer of automobiles in the United States after Ford Motor Company. This Willys-Overland doesn’t have that marque notoriety but it’s a simpler car at an obviously lower price point.

The Overland has a 4- cylinder poppet valve engine. The poppet valve is the forerunner of the type of valves used on today’s cars. The Knight engine used a sleeve valve that was more dependable at the time but more expensive to manufacture and used a lot of oil. The Overland was produced until 1926 when it was succeeded by the Willys Whippit.
